20 Nov From the Manger to the Cross
Christmas is upon us! You can walk through the nearest store and see twinkling lights on trees and glitter swirls on red stockings. Or you can just walk into your home and let the smells of pine and apple cinamon fill your senses.
Think back to your own childhood. Which stories did you love to hear year after year? Was it the three wiseman? Frosty the snowman?
I remember waking up early everyday on the weeks before Christmas and run down the hallway of my childhood home that was covered with family photos.
At the end of the hallway was a wall hanging that was only there during the month of December. It was an advent calendar in the shape of a Christmas tree.
There were 24 ornament “pockets” and one star pocket on the top. Each day my brother and I would take turns filling that day’s ornament with a little plastic candy cane.
Looking back, it’s warming memory. And I want my boys to have nostalgic memories like that. But what if those memories were intertwined with the WHY of Christmas.
The WHY of Christmas
Jesus came to earth. That’s what most advent calendars and Christmas stories talk about.
But that’s not the whole truth.
The truth is that Jesus came to earth for a reason.
When you teach your children about Christmas this year, don’t end with Jesus at the manger. Because you know and I know that the manger is just the beginning.
Teach them the WHY that made Jesus come to earth.
So what is the WHY?
The reason Jesus came to earth was the cross. But why did He endure the cross?
Hebrews 12:2 tells us that. In one verse, it tells us the WHY of Christmas. It says “For the joy set before him, [Jesus] endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Jesus came to earth and endured the cross because of a joy that was set before Him.
That joy was YOU.
That joy was YOUR CHILDREN.
What Better Time Than Christmas…
Wouldn’t Christmas be the perfect time for your daughter to learn that Jesus came to earth just because He loved her?
What better time than Christmas for your son to say, “Jesus, there’s room in my heart for You”?
This Christmas can be, not just life-changing, but ETERNITY-changing for your family.
I put together 25 short devotions for you and your family to read together this Christmas.
FROM THE MANGER TO THE CROSS is an online program that goes with you. No packing. No storing it every year. Just open up the program on your phone and read that day’s devotion (or listen to the audio) with your family.
The online program also includes a printable devotion guide and a set of advent cards that you can print on your computer at home and hang on your tree. (We’re using twine and those cute mini clothes pins to hang ours!)
