15 Jan What is God’s Purpose for Me as a Mom?
There is a common misconception you are only called IF you’re called to be a pastor or a missionary.
And if you’re not called to do any of those things then you’re not called by God to do something.
This is a super common concern I hear from moms. We think, “I’m just a mom, I don’t really have a calling on my life.”

You Are Called to Serve
Every person who has accepted Christ is called to serve. There is enough “calling” in God’s Word to last us our entire lives.
When you read His Word, you’ll find that God says over and over that you are called to serve. And we have the perfect example of this in Jesus Christ Himself.
Jesus came to serve and not to be served (Mark 10:45), and if you are serious about living like Christ then serving cannot be an option for you.
Let’s dive a little deeper into how Jesus served others. Jesus constantly served the people around Him, He fed the people who came to hear Him preach, He taught the people no matter where they were from, He washed the feet of the people around Him…and we’re called to be like Him.
With Jesus as our example, you can be sure that you are called to serve.
If you’re serious about living like Christ then servanthood has to be nonnegotiable.
It is more than just a way to give back or pay it forward. Serving in your church and in your community is the heartbeat of the Gospel.
And at the risk of offending you, can I be honest and say that it is your Christian duty to serve the people around you.
Real servanthood should be a sacrifice for you. Sometimes we think if it’s hard or takes away from our comfort then it must not be God’s will, but there’s nothing further from the truth.
We’re called to represent Christ. We’re Christians and we’re supposed to show the world who Christ is.
There is no way to accurately represent who Jesus truly is without mirroring His commitment to serve other people.
When you search your heart and realize that you have a willingness to serve, that means that you’re maturing in your faith.
As moms we think that we have to stay home and our kids must to be our priority, and that’s definitely true; however, one of the best things you can do for your child is to serve in front of them.
Let your children see you serve.
Let them realize that it’s a priority for you to serve in your local church, your community, and different ministries.
When you serve in front of your children, what you do becomes their normal.
You are working towards and pushing yourself to get out of your comfort zone a little bit.
Now your children see that as being normal. Your own personal relationship with the Lord is the #1 thing that’s going to impact your kids. Remember what they see you do creates their normal.
When you start searching out ways that you can serve in your local church and help the people around you, that is when you’re going to see change in your children.
So, where should you serve? How do you figure out where you should be serving and what you should be doing?
Where Should You Serve
What Are You Passionate About
First, what is your passion? What makes you angry, what makes you joyful, what makes you excited?
If you’re passionate about human trafficking and that is an area that touches your heart, then maybe you are called to serve in that capacity somehow.
Some people are called to quit their job completely to serve. Sometimes people are called to volunteer one or two nights a week in order to make a difference.
Next ask yourself what are you talented at? What kind of skills has God already put in your life that you are good at?
If you’re passionate about the elderly and it breaks your heart to see these elderly people who are put into a nursing home and you’re talented at singing, you can go and minister with your voice.
If you are a teacher and you really care about and want to minister to kids, I can guarantee you that there will be places for you to get plugged in at your church.
If you are good at planning events, you can use that to create a fundraising event for some important cause at your church.
What Talents Has God Given You
God has given you those skills and talents so that you can use them for His purpose.
God puts passion in your heart and puts talent in your hands for you to use for Him.
There’s a story in the Bible when a man gives money to three of his servants.
If you’d like to read it for yourself, it’s found in Matthew 25:14-30.
Here’s the gist of the story:
The first servant was given five talents, the second was given two, and the third was given one.
Then the owner went away for a short time. When he came back, he questioned them about what they did with the money they had been given.
The one that had five talents have already made five more. The man with two talents had made two more.
But the one that had one talent went and buried it and didn’t do anything with it.
The moral of the story: God expects you to use what He’s given for His purpose. And the more that you’ve been given, the more responsibility that you have to use what you’ve been given.
If you feel like you haven’t been given anything, consider what’s already in your hand. Let God show you where your passion and your purpose and your talent can all come together.

Ask For Guidance
Ask God to show you where the needs around you are. It’s easy to be blind to things.
We can be blinded to our talents because we’re looking at other people’s talents. We can be blinded to a unique way to use what we’ve been given because we’re looking at the way other people are using their skills.
That can deceive you into thinking that there’s no where for you to serve. But you need to ask God to open your eyes.
Once He opens your eyes to see the need, it changes you.
Why? Because your purpose is not about you!
This life isn’t about you being comfortable. It’s not about what’s easiest for you, but it’s about what God wants to do through you.
If you ignore or neglect the talent that’s in your hands, you’re not just hurting yourself, you are also you’re hurting the mission of God.
He has called you for a purpose and He wants you to walk in it so that other people can be closer to Him.
When God has a purpose for you, it’s important to realize that it’s going to be hard.
It’s going to take some sacrifice.
God’s purpose for you may be difficult and it’s going to probably cost some tears and cost some sacrifice.
But when you are walking in the purpose that God has for you, there is nothing like the joy that comes from that.
I have been in a place where I’ve been too comfortable. If you haven’t read the post where I talk about my word for this year, check it out.
My word this year is UNCOMFORTABLE. See, we think that being comfortable means that we’re in the will of God, but that’s not true.
When you are walking in God’s purpose for you, it doesn’t matter if it’s hard.
It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t make you feel happy all the time.
But there is always an inner joy that comes from doing what you know God wants you to do.
At the end of your life, you’re going to say “yes it was hard and required sacrifice but it was worth it.”
God’s word says in Hebrews 11 that He rewards those who are faithful to Him.
If you’re not sure how you can use your passion for God’s purpose, then just ask Him and He’ll reveal it to you.
He might not show the whole picture, but He might show you what you can do right now.
I heard a sermon from a friend who said that wisdom and purpose come from a couple of different places. She said wisdom comes from the Lord first, but it also comes from our experiences and from the people around us.
Ways to Use Your Talents
You may be thinking, my talent has nothing to do with God’s purpose.
Maybe you’re an accountant and love numbers. You could volunteer as the bookkeeper for your church. You could volunteer to help with a fundraiser, or help with organizing budgets.
You could even minister to young couples that need information on how to keep a budget.
I knew a woman who was a wedding planner and would put on events and decorate.
She took such a burden off of some of the other people that had to put on events at the church. She came in and decorated for them and made it super easy. That’s ministry!
Maybe your passion is fashion and you want to show women how dress modestly. You could create a fashion blog about how to have nice and modest outfits. That is a ministry.
If you’re really good at cooking and you can help new wives or new moms learn how to cook for their families. Maybe whenever a mom has had a baby you can set up a system so that people bring food to her so that she doesn’t have to cook.
If fitness is your passion, you can teach a class at your church for women and help them come up with healthy meal plans.
If God has put a passion in your life and you’re not sure how to live it out, then ask the people around you.
If you don’t have a support system around you, then I would recommend that you go to the Girl of Grace Facebook group.
Hop over there, share your passion and let me and other women come alongside you and help you brainstorm how to use that passion for Christ.
I guarantee you God has put things in your life so that you can use them for Him.
If you love the Lord and you are serving Jesus, then the talents that you have belong to the body of Christ.
If you don’t use those gifts, then you’re hurting the body of Christ and you’re hurting yourself because you are part of that body.
Take an inner look at your heart, at the talents that you have, and see what you can use for the body of Christ.
I would love to hear how you are using the talents God has given you for His glory! Head over to the Girl of Grace Facebook group and let me know what kind of skills that you have, what kind of passion that you have, and how you’re using it for the Lord.
If you’re not sure, then ask some questions in the group and let us come alongside you and help, encourage, and brainstorm with you.
Whenever your kids are small it can feel tough to give any more of your time because you feel like you’ve given so much of yourself already, but it is going to benefit your family.
Whenever you’re walking in the purpose that God has for you it’s going to benefit your children beyond what you can even imagine. Because you made the decision to serve, your children are going to grow up knowing that serving the Lord is a priority and something to be joyful about.
