Qualities of a Good Husband

Lately we’ve been looking at Proverbs for wisdom we can use in our everyday lives. These are meant to help you apply God’s Word.

If you’re familiar with Proverbs 31, you know it talks about a godly woman. But in the part of Proverbs 31 we’re looking at today talks about a good husband.

Proverbs 31:23 Her husband is well known at the city gates,
where he sits with the other civic leaders.

This verse got me thinking about the qualities of a good husband, but I also wanted to honor my husband on his birthday. This is part of my gift to him because I want him to know how much I appreciate his godly qualities.

Choose a husband wisely, your decision WILL change your life.

If you’re looking for a husband, make sure you’re looking beyond physical appearances. It really does matter! If you want to have a happy life, picking a good spouse is so important.

A good husband commands the respect of the community and his family through his actions, not through force.

If you’re already married, use these tips to help your husband rise up and be the best man he can be.

Treat him with the respect he deserves and he will rise to the occasion

The Proverbs 31 husband earns the respect of his family and community by his actions and character, not by force.

Respect is so important to men. When we treat our husbands with respect, it encourages them to rise to the occasion.

If you are married to someone who you don’t think is respectable, keep in mind that treating him with respect can cause him to try to be more respectable.

When looking for someone, make sure that you are looking for someone who you can respect. Look for someone whose actions and character make it hard to disrespect.

A good husband provides for the needs of his family

There are a lot of verses in the Bible that talk about the man providing for the family.

I am not saying that the wife cannot work or contribute to the finances. I work with my husband at our company, and I run this website. However, a man should want to provide.

Be leery of any man who is happy to have you pay for everything when you’re on a date. Pay attention to whether he is able to hold down a job, and take note of his desire to work.

A wife should work because she wants to, not because she has to in order to provide for a lazy man.

A good husband trains up his children in the way they should go

As mothers, it can be easy for us to want to take the reigns when it comes to training up children. We want to teach them Bible verses and how to behave. That is good, but we have to remember that our husbands play an important role in raising our kids, too.

A few years ago, I was frustrated because it felt like I was pulling most of the weight with training our children. After praying about it, I felt like God told me that my husband couldn’t fill that position because I was already in it.

As I backed off and let him take the reigns, my husband started reading the Bible with our kids every night. Now that we have six children in our home, my husband is still leading the Bible reading every night.

Sometimes we have to get out of the way so our husbands can become the men God wants them to be, not the men that we want them to be.

Pray for him

Sometimes we think we know what’s best for our husbands, but God truly knows them best. Pray and ask God to shape your husband into the man HE wants your husband to be.
