How to Set Goals with God: A Christian Approach to Productivity

Setting goals can feel overwhelming, but when you invite God into the process, everything changes. As Christians, our goal-setting isn’t just about achieving success—it’s about glorifying God and living out His purpose for our lives.

1. Start with Prayer

Before you write a single goal, pray. Ask God to align your desires with His will (Proverbs 3:6). Write down what He places on your heart and let His values guide your plans.

2. Use SMART Goals with Eternal Perspective

SMART goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound—are great tools, but add an eternal perspective. For example, instead of “I want to lose 10 pounds,” try “I want to care for my body to better serve God and my family.”

3. Break It Down

Big goals can feel daunting, so break them into manageable steps. Proverbs 21:5 reminds us, “The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty.” Create daily and weekly tasks to keep moving forward.

4. Address Obstacles

Identify distractions or habits that hinder you. Hebrews 12:1 encourages us to throw off everything that hinders, so whether it’s limiting screen time or decluttering your schedule, take practical steps to remove barriers.

5. Build Accountability

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 reminds us of the value of support. Share your goals with someone who can encourage and hold you accountable.

6. Reassess and Realign

Goals aren’t static. James 4:15 says, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” Reassess regularly to ensure your goals align with God’s calling.
