Surviving the Holidays Without Your Loved One

The holidays are often described as the “most wonderful time of the year,” but for those grieving the loss of a loved one, this season can feel anything but joyful. The empty chair at the table, the traditions that once brought joy, and the memories that flood back can intensify the pain of loss. If you’re facing this holiday season with a heavy heart, I want you to know that you’re not alone—and there is hope.

When I lost my dad, the first holiday season without him was incredibly tough. I remember feeling the weight of his absence in every tradition we carried out. But in the midst of that grief, I made a choice to lean into God’s presence and remember His faithfulness.

Here are a few ways I found comfort:

  1. Remember God’s Promises: Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” During the holidays, it’s easy to feel isolated in your grief, but God promises to be near. He understands your pain and offers comfort that no holiday cheer can match.
  2. Create New Traditions: Honoring your loved one’s memory can bring both healing and connection. Whether it’s lighting a candle in their honor, sharing stories, or starting a new tradition that reflects their legacy, these acts can transform sorrow into a celebration of the life they lived.
  3. Lean into Community: Don’t isolate yourself. Reach out to friends or family members who understand your grief. Let others support you. The body of Christ is meant to walk alongside you in these moments.

I share more about my journey through loss in my book, Not Without Hope. If you’re struggling to find hope this holiday season, I pray that my story will encourage you to lean on God’s unchanging love. Get your copy here.

You don’t have to face this season alone. God’s presence is with you, offering peace that surpasses understanding.
