The Hidden Dangers of Social Media (And How to Protect Yourself)

Social media is everywhere. It’s where we connect, get information, and even build businesses. But beneath the surface, it’s shaping our minds and behaviors in ways we might not even realize.

In my latest episode of The Renewed Mind podcast, I dive into some of the lesser-known dangers of social media and what we, as Christians, can do to guard our hearts and minds.

1. Social Media Distorts Reality

It’s easy to fall into the comparison trap when scrolling through picture-perfect images. But what we see on social media isn’t reality—it’s a carefully curated highlight reel. The Bible warns us in 2 Corinthians 10:12 about the dangers of comparison, reminding us that it’s unwise to measure ourselves against others.

Instead of feeling like we’re falling behind, we need to step back and remember: God’s plan for your life is unique, and no Instagram feed can define your worth.

2. The Hidden Dangers of Influencer Marketing

Did you know that much of what we see on social media is paid advertising—even when it doesn’t look like it? Influencer marketing has blurred the lines between genuine recommendations and paid promotions, sometimes in ways that are deceptive.

Proverbs 11:1 tells us that God detests dishonest scales—meaning integrity matters, even in marketing. As consumers, we need to approach social media with discernment and remember that not everything is as genuine as it seems.

3. The Look-At-Me Culture & Keyboard Warriors

Social media has created a culture of self-promotion and entitlement. Instead of face-to-face conversations, people lash out from behind a screen, forgetting the biblical command in Matthew 12:36—that we’ll be held accountable for every careless word we speak (or type!).

As Christians, we are called to a higher standard. Our words should build, not break. Our influence should reflect Christ, not culture.

How to Use Social Media with Wisdom

So, does this mean we should delete social media entirely? Not necessarily. But we should be wise about how we engage with it.

✔ Set boundaries for your screen time

✔ Follow accounts that inspire, not discourage

✔ Remember that your worth isn’t found in likes or comments

✔ Be intentional with your influence—pointing people to Christ, not self
